General Site Information <br />:: HISTORIC PHOTOS <br /> <br />Historic photos dramatically illustrate the changes over time showing the varied land use and the evolution of both local and regional <br />transportation network. The predominant use was agriculture until around the 1960s and licensed and unlicensed landfills beginning <br />around the mid-1960s. During its time as a landfill, construction debris and fly ash resulting from coal combustion used for generating <br />electricity were buried on site. As adjacent land became developed around the 1970s, portions of the project site were developed over <br />landfill areas and stormwater management ponds were constructed. As development continues to press outward from the urban center <br />of Madison, Fitchburg and surrounding communities, rehabilitation of brownfield sites has become more important.
