Griffin, Michael
From: Lane, Roger[lane.roger @countyofdane.com]
Sent: Friday,July 24,2015 9:36 AM
To: 'barbara k grenlie'
Cc: clerk @townofvermont.com;Widish,Shawn; Griffin, Michael;Violante,Todd;Allan, Majid
Subject: RE: CSM of My Home
Attachments: Grenlie violation vermont 26.pdf
Dear Ms. Grenlie,
Thank you for the response. Dane County Zoning is taking this matter very seriously. The
fact of the matter is that a residential unit has been installed in an accessory building and
a private sanitary system has been installed illegally on your property. Both require proper
permitting and approval from Zoning and Public Health Departments. The violation flies in
the face of the Agricultural Preservation policies for housing density rights and endangers
the public with an unauthorized private on-site septic system.
Dane County Zoning Division made you aware of this violation on March 23rd and had given you
30 days in which to begin corrective action on the violation. As of this date, no corrective
actions have been formally performed.
The Pubic Health Department issued a violation letter in April identifying the illegal septic
system. The Department requested corrective action. The corrective action needed is to
abandon the illegal septic system and to severe the water line going to the accessory
building within 30 days. This has not been accomplished.
In order to bring the accessory building into compliance with Dane County Ordinances, the
illegal septic system needs to be abandoned, the water line to the building needs to be
severed, and sanitary fixtures removed.
Your proposal to create a lot around the your residence only solves a minor portion of the
issue and does not address the real violation which is the shed with residential unit
inside.
This violation was made evident in March. It is has been four months with no corrective
action taken place. It is unfortunate that you have given us no choice but to commence
enforcement action. A citation will be issued today regarding the accessory building
violating Dane County Code of Ordinances and noted in the March 23rd letter from Dane County
Zoning Inspector Shawn Widish. (See attached.)
If there is no formal action that shows significant progress towards correcting this
violation by next week, additional citations will be issued on July 31st.
I would strongly suggest concentrating on hiring a licensed master plumber to abandon the
illegal septic system, to severe the water line, and remove the sanitary fixtures from the
building. If you chose to separate your residence from the farmland as part of the
corrective action, Dane County Zoning will be more than happy to process the paperwork
accordingly.
Respectfully,
Roger Lane
Dane County Zoning Administrator
1
