September 3, 2015
Roxbury Creek Dorf Haus Clear S•an Bridge Narrative:
Dane County Parks is requesting approv:Ito install a multi-use clear span bridge across Roxbury
Creek, behind the Dorf Haus Supper Clu• (see attached location map). Dane County Parks is
proposing to replace the existing bridg: sized at approximately 12' wide by 30' long that has
become unusable, with a clear span bri•ge sized at 12' wide by 40' long. The current bridge
abutments are too close to the stream •ank to provide the proper support, the deck is leaning
to one side, and the approach on the w:st side of the bridge is sinking. Since this bridge can no
longer support equipment, Dane Count Parks is proposing to construct a new, steel beam with
wood deck, clear span flat bridge. The ulti-use clear span bridge will meet water navigation
guidelines of 5'-0" above the ordinary h :h water mark, and be designed and engineered for
minimal environmental impacts, similar o other bridges that have been permitted within Dane
County Parks.
The bridge will be built according to the attached bridge plans. Dane County Parks is proposing
to remove the existing bridge, restore a d stabilize the area, and install a new, clear span
bridge, 12'wide by 40' long. The clear s•an bridge will be anchored in place with galvanized,
schedule 40 pipe. There may be minor b:nk scarification for the floating pan footings. No more
than 5 cubic yards of material will be re oved, if required,to accommodate placement of the
galvanized floating pan footings. Excava'ions on each side of the bank will not exceed 1'-0" in
depth and %" limestone will be placed .nd compacted to support the pans. Erosion control
will include a 12" silt sock placed on the •ownside slopes to keep debris from entering the
creek.
The proposed clear span bridge will hav: no restriction on flow within Roxbury Creek since the
proposed bridge is designed to span the entire length of the creek and the proposed longer
length will meet stable grade on both si•es of the creek.
Page I 1
