4
November 6, 1998
Re: Petition 7376:Ervin Lee
Town of Vermont
To: Brian Standing and
Dane County Zoning Committee
My realtor, Kendall Kahl, told me there is a problem in
determining how many splits we are entitled to for our farm_
Perhaps some background will help you understand our position
on this matter.
I graduated from Black Earth High School in 1956 -and
stayed on the farm working for my father. At that time, my
father's farm consisted of 85 acres in the Town of Vermont,
as well as an adjoining 198 acres in the Town of Cross Plains.
In 1965, I bought all my father's farm machinery and
livestock and entered into an agreement with my father whereby
we shared farm income and expenses fifty-fifty.
In 1967 , I married Sharon and we moved into the farm
house and my parents moved to Black Earth.
In 1981 my wife and I purchased a 120 acre parcel which
was contiguous to the west boundary of the home farm. We had
been renting this land for nine years and I felt it was a logical
addition to our farm. At that time, my fat, er still owned the 85
acre Town of Vermont parcel but he told me he had it in his Will
that I would have the first chance to buy the farm from his estate.
So for all intents an purposes I looked at the 120 acre parcel as
part of the total farm and a part I would not have to buy from the
estate. I removed all the line fences between the 120 acres and
the 85 acres and farmed it as one large field.
In 1987, my father died and I purchased the rest of the
farm from his estate.
