(kr• John Walsh Statement
I spent the first years of my life within a stone's throw of Hidden Valley Road. My father
owned the local appliance and hardware store, and my uncle owned the farm implement dealership.
My cousins, friends and employers all owned farms and I worked on quite a number of them prior
to law school.
I bought my property starting in 1980. It was not, nor ever was during the 48 years of my
life, used in agricultural production. For as long as I can remember, it has been woodlands of poor
quality oak, and more recently elm. It has no reasonable use in either agriculture or forestry.
My property is unique in that it has a huge, beautiful valley running through the center of the
land. It has a 180' drop on the east and west from my boundaries to the valley floor. Exhibit G
shows the steep relief in 10' intervals. It is an absolutely beautiful creation of nature, but has no
reasonable agricultural use.
About 90%of my property is consumed by excessively steep relief,poor soils and wetlands;
80% of the property is wholly inaccessible from the east or west boundaries:
The West Side:
• is steep drainage for the high ground of the UW Observatory to the Black
Earth Creek Watershed
• has a 180 foot drop over a 350 foot interval (measured from the southwest
corner).
• has none of the level areas common to other parcels near or along
Observatory Road
-1-
