RI Date: April 6, 1998 RE: Payne &Dolan Quarry, Herfel Property I have reviewed the information you provided regarding the proposed quarry operation at the site known as the Herfel property in the Town of Verona. My comments are as follows. 1. This office does not have any concerns about potential airborne particulates. This is based on the wet removal process involved in this operation as well as the results of a study conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services which concluded that airborne particulates from quarrying operations in general do not present significant public health concerns. 2. The hydrological investigation report from Woodward-Clyde appears to be a thorough and accurate report of the site conditions and water quality impacts from the proposed operation. This office does not disagree with the conclusions of that report. 3. This office recommends that the existing water quality in the water wells of adjacent properties should be established. We recommend that the analysis should include bacteriology, nitrate level, volatile organic chemicals (VOC), and select heavy metals. Annual testing thereafter should be aimed to detect petroleum based contaminants, since that would be the only type of contamination we would expect from this type of operation.
