Box 1231 Madison,Wisconsin 53701-1231 608-252-7000 mGóB® February 26, 1998 Dane County Land Regulation and Records Room 116 City County Building 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard Madison, Wisconsin 53709 Subject: Proposed Rezoning of Madison Gas and Electric Company West Middleton Substation Property on Highway 14 - 4343 Willow Lane, Middleton, Wisconsin Ladies and Gentlemen: Madison Gas and Electric Company(MGE) is requesting a rezone of a portion of our West Middleton Substation property from A-1 to C-2 to facilitate th/placement and operation of portable electric generating equipmenin accordance ith the enclosed material. The property is an existing electric substation, and the equipment to be added is portable electric generators and associated transformers and appurtenances to provide additional sources of electricity for Dane County customers. The lack of sufficient electric supply in the state of Wisconsin has caused the need for additional generating capacity at this critical substation in Dane County. Since supplemental generation is not permitted in the A-1 zoning district, a need to rezone to C-2 is requested. In February of this year, we obtained permission from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to establish a new rate that allows us to provide backup electrical power for an individual customer where we own the generation equipment and they pay us a per-month charge. We anticipate commercial establishments to request this service. However, until they do request it in sufficient numbers to allow us to have the size and amount of these portable units scattered out on the system, we need to have a place where we can install the units and have them available for the grid.
