Reactions to In-patient Facility
Reactions were very positive.
"There is a need for this kind of place, especially for respite care."
"How would this facility be different?"
The moderator turned that question back to the group. The response were:
"Hospitals can be so sterile and depressing."
"This facility would be more cheerful and homey than those nursing homes or hospitals."
"Individuality with space for a family to gather around comfortably and with the medical
equipment hidden from view."
"A place for family to stay overnight."
"I think there should be some kind of chapel."
"I think there are times when the dying person may need to get away from all the people
for a few days."
"There needs to be a way to accommodate younger kids, too, such as a day care or play
area. Someplace secure."
"I'm not crazy about this idea because the strength of Hospice is to keep the dying in
familiar surroundings. I would hate to see any resources taken away from what they do
best. I hope they would continue their main mission of helping families manage their
loved ones dying at home."
"With my mother's lung condition, she doesn't want life support. Just knowing such a
facility would be out there will mean I won't have to put her in a nursing home."
Participants described the place as quiet and peaceful with areas outside. They felt access should
be good enough that weather conditions would not prevent family from getting there. Parking is
important and there needs to be some kind of transportation available for those who don't drive.
One suggested it should be near a lake or the Arboretum so family members could walk around
or get some exercise. Several suggested it should have a kitchen.
All agreed that the facility is needed and would be positive addition but a few wanted more
specific information about the'needs.
Chamberlain Research Consultants
Page 20
