S. Bureau of mines and adopted by Wisconsin DILHR has
in our personal experience proven to be a reasonable and effective guideline for the protection of
public welfare and property during blasting and construction. This standard provides protection
for homes and public buildings and allows efficient mining procedures and construction methods.
More restrictive limits are not substantiated by research and would impose an undue burden on
the mining and construction, industries.
Currently two inches per second peak particle velocity is the industry standard for underground
pressurized pipe line. More recent research by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Indiana DNR
have shown that ground vibration of 5 inches per second are acceptable for pressurized pipe line
(see enclosure).
Sincerely,
eci-6
Robert Patenaude, P.E.
Geophysical Engineer
RWP:k00392
rn91 People who care, creating quality transportation-today and tomorrow
