December 13, 2015 <br /> Dane County Planning and Development <br /> City-County Bldg., Room 116 <br /> 210 Martin Luther King,Jr. Blvd <br /> Madison,WI 53703-3342 <br /> Zoning Division, <br /> We were unaware that a zoning permit was needed for the deck addition to our <br /> barn.We had called the town of Springfield inspector three years ago to see if we <br /> needed a building permit before we started remodeling our barn.When we were <br /> asked if we plan to live in the barn,we said"no,"that these were just needed <br /> improvements to keep the barn from collapsing. In that case,he said, no building <br /> permits were needed. <br /> We did not know three years ago that we would be adding a deck so he was not <br /> asked specifically about a deck addition at that time. <br /> When we decided to add a deck this year to replace the old steep, crumbling, <br /> dangerous,and unsightly cement cow ramp and platform attached to our barn (see <br /> attached photos),it did not occur to us seek a zoning permit.
