' ;'_
Dear Mr, Reynolds,
This is in response to a request from the Society of St. Pius X to provide information about the existing private
sewage system serving the premises referenced above.
The existing private sewage system consists of a holding tank with a 19,000 gallon capacity. The system was
originally sized for a school having 8 classrooms and 10 full time staff The sizing criteria presumes 20
students per classroom. The holding tank capacity is based on an estimated daily wastewater load of 3,800
gallons and a 5 day total capacity. (3,800 x 5= 19,000)
The holding tank system includes an alarm which signals when the tank needs to be pumped. The alarm is set
so there is at least one day's capacity left before any back-up or surface discharge would occur.
A holding tank system is not as sensitive to large wastewater discharges as a typical soil absorption system
would be. Events that generate large quantities of wastewater in a building served by a holding tank merely
mean that the holding tank needs to be serviced by a septic waste hauler more frequently..
The existing holding tank has a rather substantial capacity. Therefore this office is not concerned that events
such as wedding receptions, funeral receptions or other similar events will challenge the system's capacity. As
with all holding tank systems, the proper disposal of the holding tank contents by a properly licensed septic
waste hauler when the tank capacity is reached is the major public health concern. We are confident that the
Society can be relied on to comply with this requirement. James Ubersetzig and I have discussed the fact that
they will need to file a copy of their servicing contract with this office when they take possession of the
property.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 242-6515.
Sincerely,
/James P.Clark,R.S.,Director
Environmental Health Section
1202 Northport Drive,Madison,Wisconsin 53704 • (608)242-6515 • FAX(608)242-6256 0
