Zoning and Natural Resources Committee 20 Oct . 1995
Dane County Zoning Department
Room 116 City-County Building
Madison. WI 53709
Re : CUP #1262
Howard Lien and Sons
Zoning and Natural Resources Committee :
When the Dane Country Zoning Committee votes on this
Conditional Use Permit , we are hopeful that you will keep in
mind the size and time line of the proposed project , even on
a reduced basis .
At a meeting before your first public hearing on the CUP,
Town chairman Lien estimated that there was 80 ,000 ,000 tons
of limestone in the proposed 190 acres . If not approving
areas I and III , as recommended by the Christiana Town
Board , reduces the tonnage by one-half , there would still be
close to 40 ,000 ,000 tons available for mining .
If by putting the other quarries in the area out of
business , the Lien Corp , can sell 300 ,000 tons of aggregate
annually , it would take 133 years to deplete the deposit . It
is difficult to imagine that this amount of stone can be
marketed each year as the quarry in proximity to the
proposed CUP mines around 100 ,000 tons per annum. As is
constantly pointed out , the cost of transportation prohibits
trucking stone any great distance . The existing mine has
been in place for 40 years . During this time less than ten
acres has been mined.
In view of the time involved in mining just the areas
recommended by the Town Board , it would seem prudent to
accept their recommendations and not grant a CUP for areas I
and III which would also afford some protection for the
County Park . No one knows what conditions will prevail when
the recommended area is depleted , and such judgements could
best me made at that time .
Thank all of you for your consideration, and for taking the
time to come out to Christiana Town Hall .
Citizens for Rural Land Preservation
by
R.H. Rovelstad
