Smiley, Director
Community and Regional Development Planning
DATE: July 21, 1995
RE: Conditional Use Permit #1262 - Christiana
At the public hearing, there was a discussion of the agricultural capability of the soils on this
parcel. Staff statements on soil productivity were taken directly from the application as
submitted by Mr. Lien: "Percent of Land had soils in Classes I-II: 100%;" and from the
general soils map which indicates the entire site is "Prime Farmland" as defined by the U.S.
Dept. of Agriculture.
To be sure, we checked the Soil Survey of Dane County (1978) and reviewed all of the soil
mapping units on the 190-acre parcel. These eight different soils are all in Capability Unit II,
on a scale of I through VIII.
We note that the existing quarry to the west is in Rockton silt loam (RoB), which has a depth
to bedrock of 2 to 4 feet.
This same soil covers most of the area south of Koshkonong Road, within CUP #1262. There
is also a significant area of this soil north of Koshkonong Road.
All of the other soils indicate a depth to bedrock of 5 to 10 or over 10 feet (see attached list
and map).
TLS:lel
cc: Gary Gunderman
Jim Gregorious
Stan Lien
RPC
