Box 151
Edgerton, Wisconsin 53534
RE: Environmental Assessment of Howard Lien and Sons proposed quarry and request
for conditional use permit for the operation of a lime rock quarry on 190 acres of his
farm in the town of Christiana, Dane County, Wisconsin (95-338).
Dear Mr. Roethe:
This report addresses two major considerations as requested in your letter of the
28th of September, 1995. These are as follows:
The potential impacts of the proposed Howard Lien quarry system on the adjacent
Camrock Park with focus on hydrology and wildlife impacts. Discussions of these issues
follows:
1. As part of this process we conducted a field review on the 15th of October, 1995.
During the field review all areas of the proposed quarry property, existing adjacent
quarry operations and the nature and characterization of the existing Camrock Park
property (specifically that located west of the Koshkonong Creek) were investigated.
Review of wildlife impacts are primarily based on an assessment of the existing
habitat quality for wildlife found both on the Howard Lien property and in the
adjacent park and the relationships between those. Hydrologic impacts were
investigated by review of available data on the groundwater from available logs,
from adjacent nearby wells and other data relevant to the hydrogeology of the area.
This hydrological information is currently in further review and the preliminary
analysis is provided in this document.
2. Ha itg nd wildlife conditions: A review of all of the Howard Lien property
proposed for inclusion in the quarry operation suggest poor wildlife habitat
conditions exist. The majority of the 190 acre farm with exception of occasional
tree lines associated with fenced property boundaries is currently under corn or
alfalfa production. Fence lines have tree cover as a sporadic element. In some
adjacent areas especially to the South of the Lien property there are forested
corridors that are associated with slope breaks. These forest areas are dominated
by white oak and burr oak with black cherry and introduced species including
European buckthorn, as co-dominants. Corn fields are largely dominated by corn
and introduced weedy species including fox tail grasses and others.
N15:95338:101705 Page 1 of 3 Roethe/Stan Lien Quarry Letter Report
'ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING 'ENVIRONMENTAL PERMITTING •AQUATIC,WETLAND,AND TERRESTRIAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
'RESTORATION AND SPECIALTY PLANTING SERVICES *MINE RECLAMATION AND PROBLEM SOLVING 'PROJECT DESIGN 'IMPACT STUDIES
