State of Wisconsin 1 DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Op w w Southern District Headquarters
MCONSiM 3911 Fish Hatchery Road
DEPT.OF NATURAL RESOURCES Fitchburg, Wisconsin 53711
George E.Meyer TELEPHONE 608-275-3266
Secretary TELEFAX 608-275-3338
Ov 02 199k
October 28, 1994 ,i,;;(.,t:t v.. i File Ref: G2867
70N1NC! ''
Ms. Linda Kettinger
Clerk/Treasurer
Village of Cottage Grove
221 East Cottage Grove Road
Cottage Grove, WI 53527
Subject: Conditional Use Permit for Gaston Quarry Activities
Dear Ms. Kettinger:
Thank you for bringing the land use issue of proposed future uses of Gaston Quarry to my
attention. While the Department of Natural Resources does not become actively involved in the
issuance of local conditional use permits, our Bureau of Solid and Hazardous Waste does regulate
the solid waste activities DeConstruction is proposing for the quarry.
DeConstruction has notified the Department of its intent to operate a demolition materials
processing and recycling facility in the Gaston Quarry north of Cottage Grove. Linda Hanefeld of
our Southern District has informed DeConstruction representatives that a solid waste processing
license, as described in Chapter NR 502.08, Wisconsin Administrative Code, would be required.
DeConstruction would be required to meet locational and operational criteria developed to protect
human health and the environment. To date, the Department has not received a project proposal
for our review. Consequently, we are not familiar with the details of the project such that a
determination of its feasibility can be made.
The Dane County Zoning and Natural Resources Committee has the authority to issue local
conditional use permits which may contain special conditions to address social and environmental
concerns. I encourage you to share your concerns with that group. You may contact William
Fleck, Dane County Zoning Administrator, at (608) 266-9083.
Additionally, local units of government may establish zoning restrictions for their communities.
This is something your community might want to consider.
Linda Hanefeld, Southern District Waste Specialist, will be reviewing the DeConstruction proposal.
Please contact her at (608) 275-3298 with any questions or concerns you might have regarding
the proposal.
Sincerely, 7wt.... __
James R.
