Dane County Zoning & Natural Resources Committee
January 18, 1995
Page Two
(3) The Village of DeForest has also apparently said that it is opposed to our
application because it feels it would greatly increase truck traffic. This
position ignores several important facts. First, Betty and I have operated for
many years at this site one of the largest farm markets in Dane County. During
the summer, it was not uncommon for several hundred vehicles to go in and out of
our place every day. This is a location that already has a large volume of vehicle
traffic; the Eurovet operation, as a non-retail business, will result in a
significant decrease in vehicle numbers using this site. Second, other than a
few employees and occasional visitors, the number of people coming to this site
will be significantly less than is presently the case.
It is also interesting to note that the Village of DeForest is developing a large
new industrial park adjacent to Highway 51, which will have heavy truck use.
If truck traffic on Highway 51 is a concern of the Village, where will these trucks
go?
(4) Lastly, I want to express my sincere disappointment with the manner in which
the Village of DeForest chose to review our proposal and take its official
position. As astonishing as it may seem, we were never notified that the Village
of DeForest would be reviewing our proposal and taking a position on it. This
is a serious omission, for it is clear to us that their official position is based
on erroneous information and mistaken assumptions. Had we only been invited to
attend a DeForest meeting, these mistakes could have been cleared up. In contrast.
both Dane County and the Town of Windsor are very careful to directly notify
affected applicants when their application is up for consideration. It would
seem that this courtesy should be a basic thing. The one thing that is clear is
that there is much to be critical of with how the Village of DeForest reviewed
our application. It is also my understanding that Town of Windsor officials
were not contacted either prior to the Village's action and only found out about
it after they received a letter from the Village after the fact (we weren't sent
a copy of this letter either) .
Betty and I hope that your Committee will be able to approve our application
at its upcoming meeting. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
me (846-3832) or the Town of Windsor - Business Manager Jim Bricker (846-3854)
or Chairman Alan Harvey (846-5897) .
Thank you.
Myron Timm
7020 Highway 51
DeForest, WI 53532
cc: Richard Phelps, County Executive
Sup.
