BENEFITS OF CELLULAR TECHNOLOGY
CELLULAR 911 SAVES LIVES
In cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Ameritech has instituted a free Cellular
911 program which allows motorists to summon aid and report dangerous situations, permitting a quicker
response by local officials. 90% of the calls to Cellular 911 are for traffic safety purposes, including:
accident reports, stranded motorist reports, crimes in progress, car fires, and reports of poor road
conditions.
EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE ENHANCED BY CELLULAR
Cellular phones support emergency services by providing wireless communications to paramedics,
firefighters and law enforcement agencies. Cellular technology has dramatically decreased emergency
response time. Many public service providers throughout the State of Wisconsin use cellular as their
primary form of communication.
DATA TRANSMISSIONS ALLOW IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO VITAL INFORMATION
Recent advances in technology provide the ability to transmit data in addition to voice. For example,
through data hookups, paramedics can transmit vital signs of heart attack victims to a local hospital while
en route, for immediate analysis by medical personnel. Other users with fax or data capabilities can
immediately access important information from remote locations.
CELLULAR PROVIDES A BACKUP COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
Cellular technology provides a backup to the land-line phone system, permitting emergency services to
function without interruption. Cellular phones provide mobile communication capabilities in the wake
of earthquakes, floods and tornadoes that may cut off land-line service for hours or days, enhancing
rescue efforts and allowing uninterrupted emergency communications.
AMERITECH HAS DEVELOPED A DISASTER-PREPAREDNESS PLAN
Ameritech has worked with local, state, and federal agencies throughout the State of Wisconsin to develop
a plan to work as a team in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. Such cooperation will insure
emergency communications in time of disaster.
HAZARDOUS MATERIAL MANAGEMENT
Ameritech has worked closely with Hazardous Materials Management Teams to develop programs to deal
with dangerous chemical spills. Agencies with cellular data and fax capabilities are able to immediately
access nationwide hazardous material data bases from the field.
