This proposed school site appears to conflict with the adopted county plan for this
area, in the Town of Springfield. While the plan does not specifically address school sites, the
land use objectives are:
• Preserve the productive farmlands in the town for continued agricultural use
• Protect farm operations from conflict with incompatible uses
• Control sporadic development
• Protect the natural environment
Staff Comments:
This proposed 20-acre site is productive farmland, surrounded by productive farmland. The soils
on-site are all Class I & II productivity or prime agricultural soils as defined by the USDA. Soil
Conservation Service.
• While a school site may not be considered an incompatible use, it would take 20 acres
out of ag production, and likely cause pressure for additional development.
• By placing such a site away from existing development, it will encourage sporadic
development in the area rather than control it.
• There are no sensitive natural features on the site except productive agricultural land.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH (septic, etc.)
DANE COUNTY HIGHWAY
We need to review detailed plans before we can fully comment on this proposal. The
architectual firm, engaged by the school district to develop this site, has recently contacted us
regarding our requirements for entrance geometry. Sight distance to the West may be somewhat
limited and there is a need for improvements to the USH 12 intersection. CTH "K" is not a
controlled acces highway, but this access still needs department approval.
