The first set of measurements (Source Measurements) were
taken at a mineral extraction site near Cross Plains that uses equipment similar to the ones
expected to be used at this site. The second set of measurements (Background
Measurements) was taken for a 48-hr period at (2) sites located on the mineral extraction
area in the Town of Oregon.
Source Measurements
This set of measurements was taken at a mineral extraction site near Cross Plains. The
equipment/machinery used at this site is similar to the ones expected to be used at the
mineral extraction site in the Town of Oregon.
The measurements were taken with (2) sound level meters collecting data simultaneously.
The data was collected in 1-sec and 1-min intervals to allow a precise identification and
comparison of noise sources measured by both sound level meters.
The first sound level meter was located 50 feet away from the "crusher/shaker"which is the
noisiest equipment present at the site_ We also have (2) front loaders and a drop bucket
crane operating in the immediate area_ This meter was used as the "reference" meter and
was not moved during the entire measurement period.
The second sound level meter was placed along a perpendicular line away from the "crusher/
shaker" and at various distances. This method is used to measure the amount of sound
attenuation obtain from distance. At this location we were also able to measure the sound
attenuation obtained from the earth berm located on the edge of the mineral extraction area.
The results obtained from these measurements are showed in following graph. The graph
shows how the sound levels are attenuated due to both distance and the earth berm.
(11W
