(97o K- Z(
Six Mile Creek Mounds
' (.Sce ?'IMF) ✓
The are located on the eastern slope of a ridge on the J.McGuire
farm,in Westport Township,Dane eounty,West of the road from Lake
Mendota to Waunakee. Six Mile Creek, khich flows into Lake Mendota-
on its northern shore, flows through a small marshy area at the south-
ern base of this ridge and crosses the Waunakee road a short dist-
ance east of the nose of the ridge.
The linear mound angles slightly toward the south at its eastern
_ _ end. The other mound is quite irregular in outline. The linear is
about 2 and the irregular mound about three feet high at its high-
est part*
Our attention was first called to these mounds several years ago by
Dr.Alphonse Gerend whose relatives ,the O' Keefe family own the large
farm on the south side of the creek.
A likely camp site is located in a cultivated field on the north
bank of the creek at the western end of the ridge. Owing to the
presence of a heavy crop of corn on this field nothing could be
found.
Evidences of a camp site were found in a cultivated field at the
notherm base of the ridge. Flint chips and fragments were especi
ally plentiful on a small rise in this field west of the Waunakee
road and creek. Flint chips were also found in several places at
the southern base of the ridge, where the soft had been disturbed
Flint points have been found on the OKeefe farm along the banks
of the creek.
C.E.and T.
