Zoning Petition #5366
deals with an area that represents one of a last relatively
intact and functioning natural systems in •ne County. The Dunlop
Hollow area is represented by a tremendous .iversity of habitat
types that are very representative of pre-s-ttlement times. The
particular parcel being considered for rezo ing has raised
concerns that I think need to be addressed •efore making a
rezoning determination.
Of particular concern to our Bureau is the abitat fragmentation
that has already occurred in this area. Thi- area has suffered
from the loss of valuable habitat and is al eady showing signs of
a weakened natural system. Of particular co cern is the watershed
itself which has suffered greatly from eros on and stream
sedimentation, agricultural chemicals, and .hysical alteration of
the landscape. This system is at the point here additional
impacts will only compound the current prob ems.
In addition to the habitat are concerns for one of Wisconsinls
endangered species, the ornate box turtle. Dunlop hollow harbors
one of the last remaining populations of th s unique, totally
land dwelling turtle. This species requires the deep sand which
this parcel possesses for hibernation. In addition, this parcel
contains some prairie plant species the tur le requires as part
of its diet. Dunlop Hollow has very few ope prairie areas left
and to loose more will only hurt the turtle chance of survival
and potential recovery. The particular pare 1 in question is
within the ornate box turtles current habit-t use area.
Mated so
!WOW'WV
I
