David M. Mickelson
Environmental and
Glacial Geologist
Professor
I V •
12 March 1993
Mr . William Paulson
Paulson Construction
DeForest , WI
Dear Bill
This is in response to your request for an opinion on the
potential impact on groundwater of 'your plan to expand the area
of the quarry in Cottage Grove . The quarry lies on Hwy. N, in
section 4 , T . 7 N. , R. 11 E . , and is now being used as a source
of dolomite . I visited the quarry today .
I do not see any likelihood• of the planned operation having an
impact on the quality of groundwater or the amount of recharge
taking place as long as some precautions are taken. The area
should not be used for storage of chemicals or fuels , and if
refueling is done at the site, then care should be taken to avoid
spills . Because your plans do not include washing of product at
the site with groundwater pumped at the site, the operation will
nol affect groundwater levels in other wells . Recharge to the
sandstone aquifer below should be about the same or more than it
is under ag land, so again there will be no significant change.
In summary, from an environmental geology point of view, I do not
see any problem with approval of your conditional use permit . In
fact , as the number of potential quarry sites decreases in the
county because of development , it is of more and more benefit to
the consumer and tax payer to keep quarries open, which reduces
hauling costs . This land can later be used for residential
development or reclaimed as ag land allowing wise use of our
resources .
• cerely,
avid .-Mickelson
Geology and Geophysics
2166 Keyes Ave .
University of Wisconsin
Madison.
