(1) ABANDONED OR OUT OF SERVICE TANKS. <br /> Aboveground tanks temporarily out of service or abandoned shall be <br /> equipped with valves and vents in accordance with s. Ind 8.19 or made <br /> gas free and have pipe plugs installed in all tank openings. Written no- <br /> tice to the local fire authority shall be given when tanks are rendered <br /> temporarily out of service. <br /> (2) TANK REMOVAL.If tanks are not put back into use after a 12 month <br /> period, tanks shall be removed from the location. <br /> History:Cr.Register,March, 1982,No.315,eff.4-1-82. <br /> Ind 8.205 [2-3] Installation of underground tanks. (1) GENERAL. <br /> The use of rivited or caulked tank, for underground storage shall be <br /> prohibited. <br /> (2) 12-3.1] LOCATION.Excavation i':1r underground storage tanks shall <br /> be made with due care to avoid una.rmining off undations of existing <br /> structures. Underground tanks or t.+,cks under buildings shall be so lo- <br /> cated with respect to existing building foundati us and supports that <br /> the loads carried by the latter cannot be transmi:ted to the tank. The <br /> distance from any part of a tank -;wing Class I. Class II or Class III <br /> liquid- to the nearest wall of any ha -ment or pit hall be not less than 1 <br /> foot,and to any property line that can be built up( n,not less than 3 feet. <br /> (3) [2-3.2] BURIAL DEPTH AND COVER. (a) [2-3.2.1] Steel underground <br /> tanks shall be set on firm foundations and surrounded with at least 6 <br /> inches of clean sand or pea gravel w1.11-tamped in place.The tank shall <br /> be placed in the hole with care. sine_• dropping or rolling the tank into <br /> the hole can break a weld.puncture:r damage the tank,or scrape off the <br /> protective coating of coated tanks. <br /> (b) [2-3.2.2] Steel underground tanks shall be covered with a mini- <br /> mum of 2 feet of earth,or shall be covered with n ,t less than one foot of <br /> earth, on top of which shall be placed a slab of rc inforced concrete not <br /> less than 4 inches thick. When they:ire,or are likely to be,subjected to <br /> traffic, they shall be protected against damage Crom vehicles passing <br /> over them by at least 3 feet of earth cover,or 18 :aches of well-tamped <br /> earth plus either 6 inches of reinfor<:d concrete cr 8 inches of asphaltic <br /> concrete.When asphaltic or reinforced concr, ;e,,tying is used as part of <br /> the protection, it shall extend at least 1 foot ht,:izontally beyond the <br /> outline of the tank in all directions. <br /> (c) [2-3.2.3] Nonmetallic underground tanks shall be installed in ac- <br /> cordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The minimum depth of <br /> cover shall be as specified in par. (b) for steel tanks. <br /> (d) [2-3.2.4] For tanks built in accordance with s. Ind 8.18 (3) (a), <br /> the burial depth shall hr such that the static head imposed at the bottom <br /> of the tank will not exceed 10 prig if the fill or nt pipe is filled with <br /> liquid.
