8022 Maurer Road Cross Plains,VI 53528 August 19, 1991 Ms.Shary Bisgerd District 10,Supervisor Dane County Board 1 Julia Circle Madison,VI 53705 Re: Zoning Petition*5026 Dear Ms.Bisgard: We are writing you regarding our petition noted above and also to give you background information for the working meeting of the Dane County Zoning and Natural Resources Committee on August 27, 1991. Our request for rezoning this parcel of land is the culmination of a decision made more than 28 years ago. Our farm (220 acres located in Cross Plains Township)has been in the Maurer family for more than 45 years. It was the intent and wish of our late husband and father, Ernest V.Maurer,that Tom would live on and work the farm,and Elizabeth would be given land so she and her husband,Johan,could build a house and retire to the farm. No sale of land is involved in our petition. When Tom acquired the farm Ernest Maurer's original plan for his family was accomplished since Elizabeth had previously been promised a homesite. Johan and Elizabeth have lived and worked in many areas of the United States. They currently reside in Brookfield,Wisconsin. Their interest in retiring to the home farm has never wavered. Last spring,Tom presented a proposal for Elizabeth and Johan's homesite to the Cross Plains Town Board. Our proposal accounted for the following: sufficient acreage for an additional homesite,request for a site not involving productive agricultural land and access to the homesite along a fenceline rather than across a productive field. Cross Plains Township is part of the Farmland Preservation Plan,A-1 Agriculture (Exclusive) Zoning. The proposal was approved by the Town Board. There were no objections to the proposal by neighbors or others in attendance. This was the petition presented to the Dane County Zoning and Natural Resources Committee on May 14, 1991. At that meeting,attended by Tom Maurer and Johan Glasser,the committee did not express any objections to our petition. No action was taken by the committee because there was "no communication"by the Town Board. Subsequently the petition was held over (May 28, 1991)and referred to the June 3rd meeting "to allow time for Gary Verner to contact the applicant regarding the Ice Age Trail." Action on the petition was postponed "until the work meeting in June"and was then referred "to the Aug.27, 1991 work meeting in order to provide time for contacting the Maurers regarding the Ice Age Trail Concerns." The committee seems to be favoring Mr.Verner's requests over taking action on our petition. Mr.Werner had missed a previous meeting at which he was to address this issue. In the past we had been contacted by Mr.Werner about the Ice Age Trail. Our original discussion about the trail on our land was in terms of a 10'strip of land along Timber
