The 40 acre
parcel that Dane County Public Works is planning to purchase is part of a 202.24 acre parcel that the
present owner, the James J. Van de Grift Trust, has for sale(see attached plat map). The Soil
Conservation Survey for Dane County indicates that clay soils meeting DNR specifications exist over this
entire parcel. Test pits verifying the quantity and quality of clay present on this parcel will be dug
during October/November 1991.
Dane County proposes to remove the clay soils from this parcel during 1992. Approximately 100,000 to
200,000 cubic yards will be needed. Clay extraction will begin in the Spring of 1992. Scrapers will be
used to remove and stockpile the overlying topsoil. The clay materials will then be excavated and
transported across Cross County Road to the landfill site. Once the clay has been excavated, the borrow
area will be regraded to resemble the original topography and drainage patterns. The topsoil will then be
replaced and the land restored for future use.
Access from the site will be directly across Cross Country Road into the northeast corner of the Verona
Landfill. Access roads and the portion of Cross Country Road being traversed will be maintained as
necessary by Dane County. The parcel is currently used for agriculture. The majority of the adjacent
land is also agricultural or else part of Badger Prairie Park. Only two single family residenses are
located on this section of Cross Country Road. The parcel is approximately 3/4 mile south of several
residential developments located near CTH PD.
