d cs'oVim 6946 Twin Lane Road Sun Prairie, WI 53590 April 9, 1990 Shary Bisgard, Chair Agriculture, Environment, and Land Records Committee Dane County Zoning Department Room 116, City-County Building Madison, WI 53709 RE: C.U.P. 817 ane .U.P. 824 Dear Ms. Bisgard: The purpose of this letter is to set forth our protest to the establishment of a mineral extraction operation (better known as a quarry pit) less than a mile from our residence. We are concerned for a number of reasons including: 1) Potential Impact on the Water Aquifer and Water Wells in our Area: No public water supplies are available in our area, and we must secure our water from our wells. Compromise of the aquifer which transports and provides our water, through extraction of the components or introduction of surface water from the resulting pit could destroy our drinking water supply. 2) Increased Traffic on Twin Lane Road: The use of heavy vehicles to carry the loads to and from the quarry will significantly increase the noise level on a now minimally traveled road and will subject the road to greater stress and degradation as a result of these heavy vehicles. 3) Increased Air and Noise Pollution: The actual process of extracting gravel from what is now farmland will stir up large amounts of dust. Machinery used to extract the gravel is loud and can be heard from some distance. 4) Destruction of Farmland and Creation of an Eyesore for Years to Come: The County of Dane is furthering the destruction of farmland by the establishment of this quarry. Further, we have seen evidence of quarries throughout Dane County. They not only destroy the land, but create an unsightly pit. The land is never restored to its original condition or landscaped upon completion. Not only is this objectionable from an ecological standpoint, but it threatens to devalue our property.
