p. 2
sound management practices , and have a high organic matter
content . Plano silt loam, 0 to 2 percent slope , is found
on one percent of our county ' s land.
As citizens of the county and stewards of her resources ,
careful consideration should be given to proposals that forever
take prime farmland out of production. Swimming pools ,
clotheslines , access drives and lawn sheds make poor corn and
hay fields . We should ask what will be gained by who if this
parcel is developed? Very likely, a handful of people will
benefit at the expense of all of us who pay for the land ' s
upheaval .
It is unfortunate that a few stand to gain from the difficult
circumstances of others . Dismemberment of a farmstead in the
prime of our ccunty ' s farmland can serve only to set a dangerous
precedent in the decision making processes of others who may
purchase farmland without fully considering the responsibility
and care that goes with such a transaction. Rezoning A-1
exclusive agricultural land makes it difficult for farmers to
purchase cropland and pasture when other , non-resident, non-farm
interests persuade laudowners of the lucrative gain they may incur
by quickly and forever taking land out of prdduction.
I am 'proud to make my living as a dairy farmer , although
it seems an unappreciated occupation at times . My sons have in-
formed me of their intention to farm our valley . I 'm proud of that
too. I urge the zoning board to consider the future of aspiring
young farmers, like my sons , in your decision . I also ask that
you consult the township in this matter , and again, thank you for
allowing me to speak against this petition tonight .
James W.
