From 1988 to the present, Dane County Public Works has operated 2
DNR approved compost sites, one located near the Dane County
Airport and the other at Lake Farm Park. The proposed Badger
Prairie compost site will expand the county' s program by
providing a more readily accessible site for western Dane County .
The proposed site has received verbal approval from the DNR to
operate as a yard waste compost site in accordance with NR 502 .04
and NR 502 .08(2 ) ( b) , Wisconsin Administrative Code.
Work on the site would begin as soon as all approvals are
obtained . Dane County will operate this site using basic windrow
technology . The site will be maintained to prevent ponding and
surface runoff. Chipped wood will be spread over the site as
necessary to provide an improved work surface. An existing
access road will be used the reach the site from the intersection
of USH 18-151 and CTH PB (see figure 1 ) . A gate will be
installed to limit access , and a small portable building shall be
installed for the site monitor . The site will be open from
approximately April thru December each year.
Bulk yard wastes will be delivered to staging areas. The yard
waste materials will then be formed into large windrows for
composting using a front-end loader. Loads containing mixed
refuse will not be accepted . The windrows will be turned
periodically to maintain aerobic conditions and to optimize the
composting process. After approximately one year of composting ,
the composted material will be removed from the site to make room
for the next season ' s yard waste. The finished compost will be
available to the public and used as a mulch and as a soil
additive at Dane County Badger Prairie Park. A surplus of
composted material will not be stored at the site. If more
composted material is produced than can be used at Badger Prairie
Park, area farmers will be contacted to take the surplus . Any
trash that may be mixed with the yard waste will be removed and
disposed of at Dane County Landfill Site No. 2 .
If you have any questions regarding this matter , please call me
at 266-4139 .
Sincerely,
DANE COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS DEPT.
ati4"
44-14441-.:
Allan C echolinski
Solid Waste Engineer
