PARK Dane County
iY o.
4,V'e a, ? I Park Commission
jfOM•.
COMMISSvaN 4318 Robertson Road, Madison, Wisconsin 53714 • Telephone: 608/246-3896
JAMES G.MUELLER, Acting Director KENNETH J. LEPINE,Supervisor WAYNE PAULY,Naturalist
246-3893 246-3894 246-3899
October 23, 1990
Memo to the Dane County Zoning and Natural Resources Committee
From: Larry A. Johns
Indian Mounds Project Coordinator
After reviewing all of the October Rezoning requests and field
checking nine of the sites , it has been determined that one site does
still contain a Native American burial mound .
Zoning Petition # 4882 (Item No . 1) which is located in the NE
1/4 , SE 1/4 of Section 16 of. the Town of Dunn has at least one mound
remaining of at least three that once existed . The remaining mound is
part of the Evans Mound Group which was first recorded in 1914
(McLachlan, 1914) . This mound is presently severely defaced , as it
was once part of a hog and cattle pasture, but most of it is still
present and appears to be the remains of some type of effigy . The two
other mounds mentioned by McLachlan could not be relocated during this
visit .
The present property owner (Ms . Becky Huff ) informed me during our
initial telephone conversation that she believed the property did
contain a mound . This information had been relayed to her by the
previous landowner . She then accompanied me on the investigation
where we were able to determine that the mound was still extant . She
has expressed an interest in having the mound catalogued for the
County 's 25 ft . setback.
Her present plans for house construction will not effect the
remaining mound since the proposed development is approximately 100
ft . away. Soil horizons around the presently excavated foundation do
not indicate that either of the other mounds mentioned by McLachlan
were affected .
BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE
McLachlan, W .G. 1914 .
