Dane
County
Parks &Water Resources Department
Chris James,Senior Landscape Architect
June 1,2016
Weisensel Clear Span Bridge
Dane County Parks is planning to install a pedestrian/snowmobile bridge across an unnamed tributary of
the Koshkonong Creek at Lat/Lon: 43.121609, -89.193657. The project site is located on public lands in
McCarthy Youth and Conservation County Park near County Hwy TT and County Hwy N in the
Township of Sun Prairie and will connect future pedestrian/snowmobile trails within the park. The project
will include the addition of a 12' wide x 50' long steel and wood arched clear span bridge. This bridge
will be built according to the attached bridge plans and is similar to other bridges permitted by the WDNR
within Dane County Parks. There will be minor bank scarification and no more than 3.5 cubic yards of
material will be removed, if required,to accommodate the placement of the galvanized floating pan
footings. Excavations on each side of the bank will not exceed 1'-0" in depth, fabric will be installed and
3/4"compacted limestone rock placed on top to provide a pad for the support pans. The floating clear span
bridge will be anchored in place with galvanized, schedule 40 pipe.
The bridge will meet water navigation guidelines of 5'-0"above the Ordinary High Water Mark, and be
designed and engineered for minimal environmental impacts. Steel plate approaches will be implemented
if the bridge height requires approaches greater than the maximum 1'-0" in depth. Erosion control will
include the placement of an urban/net free erosion mat in the disturbed areas to ensure proper restoration,
and seeding and mulching all disturbed areas prior to forecasted rain events.A 12"silt sock will be placed
on the downside slope on both sides of the river to keep debris from entering the river. No alterations or
disturbances will be made to the water or bed of the unnamed tributary.
The selected bridge location is within a drainage district and has received deposits of dredge material over
many years that has created an upland artificial berm on both sides of the channel. This location was
chosen to avoid surrounding wetlands and maximize clearance above the water.
Lyman F.Anderson Agriculture&Conservation Center
5201 Fen Oak Court,Room 234,Madison,Wisconsin 53718-8812-Phone:608/246-3896,FAX:608/246-3898
www.countyofdane.com/lwrd/parks
