Clay extraction will take place only in the low-lying area, which makes up approximately
16-18 acres of the 27 acres that are shaded on the accompanying map. Soil series
boundaries from the Dane County Soil Survey have been superimposed. Soils that will
be excavated are:
Radford (RaA) - A deep, nearly level alluvial soil overlying a buried silty
soil. 0-3% slopes.
Plano (PnB) - A deep, nearly level glacial soil formed in loess overlying
glacial till and outwash. Subsoil consists of massive, sandy
loam till. 2-6% slopes
Troxel (TrB) - A deep, gently sloping alluvial soil. Subsoil consists of
silt loam. 1-4% slopes.
Virgil (VwA) - A deep, nearly level glacial soil formed in loess overlying
glacial till and outwash. Subsoil consists of massive, sandy
loam till. 1-4% slopes
Excavation of these soils coupled with the proposed future land use will not increase
the risk of groundwater contamination.
The other soils series present include Whalan Loam (WxC2), Whalan Silt Loam (WwE2),
and Rockton Silt Loam (RoC2) . These soils are steep sloping (6-30%) and are formed
in glacial till overlying fractured dolomite bedrock. These soils are thin and do
not contain clay--Dane County has no intention of disturbing any of these areas.
Consequently, the clay extraction project, as proposed, can be done without threatening
area groundwater.
2. The soil being backhauled from the Landfill will be a sandy loam till. Grain size
analyses indicate that it is approximately 7-12% clay, 9-23% silt, and the remainder
sand and gravel.
If you have any questions, please call me at 266-4139.
gdf
encl.
