Had any question arisen regarding the raising of
livestock on the property, petitioners would have investigated
further at the time of purchase. However, because the previous
owner had owned livestock and the acreage was over 5 acres as they
understood it to be, petitioners had a reasonable basis for the
initial purchase of the livestock. If additional contiguous
acreage were available, petitioners would have purchased such
additional acreage in order to satisfy the Dane County Zoning
Ordinance. However, this is impossible.
The property is bound on two sides by county roads
(Ridge Road and West Jargo Road) so that expansion in those two
directions is impossible. Another side of petitioners ' property is
bound by property owned by the Town of Cottage Grove. Petitioners
inquired as to purchasing part of this property in order to
acquire sufficient acreage to raise livestock and were informed in
a letter dated December 20 , 1984 , from the town of Cottage Grove
Chairman, Eugene Skaar, that the Planning Committee of the Town of
Cottage Grove would not be willing to sell this land to them. The
other side of petitioners ' property is bounded by property owned
by Shawn Olsen, who owns a total of 7 acres . Petitioners have
likewise inquired of Mr. Olsen regarding the purchase of
additional acreage, and Mr . Olsen has advised that he is unwilling
to sell a portion of his property.
Consequently, petitioners are unable to increase their
acreage. They have attempted in good faith to comply with the
-3-
