CAPITOL SAND AND GRAVEL CO, INC.
8355 Sta,,ecoach Road
CROSS PLAINS, WISCONSIN 53528
P . 608 798-3051
November 23 , 1987
Agriculture, Environment , & Zoning Committee
City COunty Building
210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Madison, WIS. 53703
Dear Committee Members;
We have been informed that Mr . John DeBeck of Speedway Sand
and Gravel Co. is again applying for an A-2 zoning with a
conditional use permit to operate a quarry on Highway 14 west of
Middleton.
We are strongly opposed to such a move for a number of
reasons. First and foremost is the fact that there are currently
three operating limestone quarries on Highway 14 between Middleton
and Cross Plains. One is on Pleasant View Road across from Fish
Building Supply, the second is directly opposite the proposed site
on Twin Valley Road , and the third is our quarry on Stagecoach Road
one mile east of Cross Plains. In addition to these already
mentioned , there is an operating quarry 2 miles north of Middleton
on Highway 12, and we operate a quarry on Mineral Point Road 4
miles west of the beltline. The west Madison and Middleton area
is very adequately served by these existing operations.
Secondly , the Madison area which has had a strong construction
year enjoys the benefits of a highly competitive industry with
relatively cheap prices. Very efficient operations have created
the economies of low prices and adequate service for the consumer.
Thirdly, the current operation of a landfill adjacent to the
proposed site makes for a convenient place to dump waste materials
that are common to a quarry operation. The "Refuse Hideaway"
landfill more commonly known as DeBeck ' s dump does not enjoy the
best of reputations for the meeting of all the standards imposed
by the state and county for such operations.
Another consideration is the nearness to existing houses to
the proposed site. It is bordered on the north by a developed
Whed ]. I;
as
Limeetoac Top Soil
Concrete Aggregate, Equipnrenent Rentals Sand - Clay Fill
