•, . • . _
Sisters of St Benedict
Fox Bluff.Box 5070
Madison,WI 53705
608/836/1631
June 24, 1986
Ms. Judy Rendall, Chairman
Agriculture, Environment & Land Records Committee
C/o Dane County Zoning Department
Room 316, City-County Building
Madison, WI 53709
Re: Zoning Petition #3682 (Westport Sand & Gravel)
Dear Ms. Rendall:
The purpose of this letter is to express the concerns of the Sisters of St. Benedict
to the above referenced zoning request. Our concerns are not so much related to
the past activities of the petitioner, but rather are a deep concern for the
preservation of resources and the maintenance of a safe and quality community.
Summarized below are the concerns we wish to express:
1) Will this site and all adjacent sites used by the petitioner
for mineral extraction be reclaimed for productive and aes-
thetically acceptable uses when extraction is completed?
2) Will the reclamation be completed as extraction of each
area is completed, or will no reclamation be done until all
extraction is finished (perhaps 10-20 years)?
3) What will be the reclaimed land topography, that is, will
the excavation areas be restored to current elevations?
4) How can the community be assured that resources to complete
the reclamation will be available when needed?
5) What dust control measures will be implemented by the
petitioner as the level of extraction increases?
6) What traffic control measures will be implemented to
assure the safety of the community given the development
of the new state park, proposed new developments, and the
current heavy vehicle problems?
7) Given the fact that the petitioner has operated recently
in violation of existing ordinances, what assurances are
there that guarantee reclamation completion for the community?
Thank you very much for the opportunity to express our feelings. It is our
intention to be represented at all future hearings or meetings, and we wish to
be specifically informed of any as they are scheduled.
Sincerely,
Sister Mary David Walgenbach, O.S.B.
