PETITION
To Whom It May Concern:
The undersigned herewith oppose and object toithe development of lands immediately
adjacent to the current Deer Run Heights development until : (a) appropriate studies
are undertaken to determine the immediate and future impact of additional wells and
septic systems upon the quality of area groundwater; and (b) assurances are made
that steps will be taken to protect existing wells in the area.
The reason for concern is as follows: After examining drilling logs for several
homes in Deer Run Heights, it was the strong opinion of Mr. Tom Calabresa, Wisconsin
Department of National Resources, and Professor David Stephenson, groundwater geolo-
gist formerly with the Department of Geology, University of Wisconsin, that: (a)
a very real danger of well polution already exists; and (b) additional development
in the area will greatly increase that danger.
The difficulty is that just a thin layer of surface soil exists for filtration of
septic effluent (8 feet on the Ferrara-Walters lot, located at the east end of the
Deer Run Development, approximately 12-14 feet on other lots) . Below this layer, due
to the bedrock of fissured limestone and sandstone, there is little or no additional
filtration. In addition, it is obvious to all residents that water moves very quickly
through the bedrock, as evidenced by muddy tap water in many homes whenever a new well
is drilled.
Both Calabresa and Stephenson strongly recommend that the groundwater situation be
evaluated before the area is further developed.
