The FAA
operates and maintains a number of complex, electronic facilities on
airport land for the purpose of providing safe and effective navigation of
aircraft. This parcel, proposed for relocation of the ASR, is land
purchased in large part by the federal government for airport purposes,
and would be leased back to the federal government at no cost.
The existing ASR was constructed within the airfield runway complex in
the early 1970's. The ASR provides the FAA air traffic controllers with
the information necessary to locate and track all aircraft within a forty
mile radius, up to an altitude of 8,000 feet, from this airport. Within
this 5,000 square mile area, the FAA controls approximately 190,000
aircraft per year. The function of this facility is to insure the safe
separation and efficient routing of all aircraft in this air space. Since
the ASR was constructed, the air space under control of the local FAA has
increased considerably, and the current site has poor coverage because
of hills in the surrounding area. The proposed location is located on a
hill mass north of the existing site and will significantly improve radar
reception.
We anticipate construction of the radar site and access road to begin the
summer of 1988, and continue into the fall, with commissioning of the radar
to occur in April 1989.
Land uses within 300 feet of the proposed site are as follows:
Land to the north, east, west and 170 feet to the south of the FAA
property lines are agricultural. The area beyond 170 feet to the south
is residential.
