March 5, 1987
NORMAN P MITBY
District Director
Mr. George Tyson
Food and Energy Breakthrough
1402 E. Skyline Drive
Madison, WI 53705
Dear Mr. Tyson,
Madison Area Technical College is developing a two year associate degree program
entitled Biotechnology Laboratory Technician. This program will be started in the fall of
1987, pending final approval by the state board of Vocational, Technical and Adult
Education. We are in the process of developing a competency based curriculum for this
program. We have data available relative to the types of skills needed by laboratory
technicians from the respondents to our surveys and from telephone interviews with
survey respondents. We would like to use a system called DACUM to organize and validate
the curriculum. Our current perspective, however, is primarily from that of the employer/
supervisor. We feel that the curriculum will be greatly enhanced if we also have the
perspective of the laboratory technicians themselves. We realize that each laboratory will
have different foci for their technicians. The new program will benefit greatly if we are
able to have the direct input of laboratory technicians.
We would like to organize a one to two day workshop for the purpose of developing
the DACUM for the Biotechnology Laboratory Technician program (see attached sheet for a
description of the DACUM process). We would like to meet April 6 and 7 or April 7 and 8 if
possible. As you can see from the description of DACUM we need 8 to 12 persons employed
as laboratory technicians to complete this task. We would provide the participant with
parking and lunch while they were in attendance at the workshop. If you employ laboratory
technicians who would be willing to participate in this project we would be able to offer
your organization $ 50 per day per technician for professional services. We would prefer
to pay this directly to your organization.
We hope that you will be able to fit this project into your busy schedules. The
success of the program and its value to future employees depends on the interchange of
ideas and information. MATC intends to provide you with future employees competent in
laboratory skills.
Sincerely,
7)e,
y A.
