Please contact Dane County Zoning Division(608)266-4266 for specific ordinance language. <br /> 10. 195 Dane County Zoning Guide for Domestic Fowl <br /> The keeping of up to 6 female chickens, ducks, or quail, collectively domestic fowl, is a <br /> permitted use on any single family residential lot in any zoning district in Dane County. <br /> To ensure that the keeping of domestic fowl is done in a responsible manner that protects the public health, <br /> safety, and welfare and avoids conflicts with neighboring uses, Dane County Zoning enforces the following <br /> standards: <br /> ✓ No slaughtering of domestic fowl shall occur on a residential property. <br /> ✓ Fowl must have access to a covered enclosure. <br /> ✓ Fowl may not roam in an unfenced area. <br /> ✓ Fowl must be kept within a covered and fenced enclosure or fenced enclosure at all time. <br /> ✓ Such enclosures mentioned must be clean, dry, and odor-free. <br /> ✓ Fowl, and their enclosures, are to be kept in a manner that will not disturb the use or enjoyment of <br /> adjacent properties. <br /> Dane County Zoning permits are required prior to placing covered residential chicken enclosures on properties. The table <br /> below provides the requirements for such structures: <br /> Standards for Domestic Fowl Covered Enclosure Permit <br /> Permit required Yes <br /> Zoning district All <br /> Residence required Yes <br /> Location Within Rear and/or Side Yards <br /> Maximum size 120 square feet* <br /> Maximum height 12 feet <br /> Setback to any adjoining lot's residential structure 25 feet <br /> Setback to water of any lake, river, or stream 75 feet <br /> Permit fee $15.00 <br /> Application for a domestic fowl enclosure permit is made at the Dane County Zoning counter. Zoning permit <br /> application material is available on our website located at: <br /> http://www.countyofdane.com/PLANDEV/zoning/zoning permit.aspx <br /> The application must be accompanied by a site plan, drawn to a measurable scale, which includes all lot lines, <br /> all existing structures, and the location of the domestic fowl structure.
