Standard Erosion Control Plan for Construction and
Maintenance Activities
Introduction
ATCis committed to environmental leadership in all aspects of our business.
During utility construction and maintenance projects, there is a potential for erosion or
sediment discharge to occur. To address the issue of erosion, ATC ATC developed this
Erosion Control Plan. This is a standard plan that applies to all ATC activities, unless a
project specific plan has been developed.
The purpose of this Erosion Control Plan is to provide information to all field personnel to
enable them to identify conditions where soil erosion may occur and assist them in
determining the Best Management Practices (BMP.) that can be used to prevent erosion
and soil loss.
This document should be used as a guide by field personnel, including the Construction
Coordinator (CC), General Foreman (GF), Environmental Monitor (EM), and erosion
control contractors (if applicable) to determine the best erosion control measures to be
used on site that will avoid or minimize the potential for erosion. However, all employees
and contractors should identify and report erosion and/or damaged or ineffective erosion
control devices to the CC, GF or EM.
This Erosion Control Plan consists of descriptions of the general causes of erosion and
some common measures available to prevent erosion from occurring. It also contains an
Erosion Control BMP Matrix that identifies appropriate BMPs that can be used in a variety
of field conditions.
Prior to and during construction, the CC, GF, EM, and erosion control contractor (if
applicable) should identify any areas where the construction activity and access are likely to
result in erosion. If possible, access and work practices that avoid soil loss should be?
identified and implemented. If this is not possible, the Erosion Control BMP Matrix should
be used to help determine the specific BMPs to minimize erosion.
Best Management Practices
There are four general categories of BMPs:
• Avoidance practices are intended to avoid soil exposure and prevent soil loss from
occurring,
• Erosion control practices are intended to reduce the wearing away of soil from the
ground surface,
• Sediment control practices are intended to capture sediment before it leaves the
construction site and enters sensitive resource areas like waterways or wetlands,
• Other practices can be utilized to prevent erosion and soil loss but do not fall under
the preceding categories.
ENV EF 27
See on-line version for current revisions.
Page 4 of 8 Revision Date:06/22/09
