Sediment Control Practices
Erosion control and sediment control are interconnected and typically principles meant to
7
reduce erosion also reduce sediment movement. Implementing restoration activities as soon
as possible after ground disturbance can eliminate or reduce the need to use sediment control
barriers like perimeter barriers and silt fences, which lead to project cost savings.
The basic sediment control principles are similar to those meant to minimize erosion:
• Apply perimeter control BMPs BEFORE construction begins,
• Adequately protect storm water and sewer inlets to prevent soil loss;
• Use BMPs to reduce the movement of disturbed sediment;
• Conduct regular follow-up visits after active construction is completed to ensure the site
is stabilized with vegetation.
Specific Sediment Control BMPs include the following:
VEGETATED BUFFERS (T-OHD-MSC-0 2 4.0001
• Existing grassy vegetation should be maintained to the extent practicable to provide
treatment of runoff leaving the construction site.
• Vegetative buffers should not be used if there is snow cover or if the vegetation is dead.
• Existing vegetation should be preserved around environmentally sensitive areas to
prevent sediment discharge from entering the area.
TRACKING PADS
• Tracking pads should be utilized at construction access points from roadways.
• Sediment tracked onto the roadway should be removed at the end of each day, unless
weather or working conditions dictate otherwise.
SILT FENCING (T-OHD-MSC-025.0001
• Silt fencing should be used to shorten slope length but is not suitable for use in channels.7
• It may be used as a perimeter control to prevent sediment from entering
environmentally sensitive areas.
PERIMETER SEDIMENT BARRIER(T-OHD-MSC-026.0001
• Perimeter sediment barriers may be used in place of silt fences when correct trenching
installation of silt fences is not possible (i.e. when the ground is frozen).
• Perimeter sediment barriers may be used to shorten slope lengths and to prevent sediment
discharge to environmentally sensitive areas.
TEMPORARY DITCH CHECK (T-OHD-MSC-027.0001
• Temporary ditch checks should be used in ditches or channels to reduce flow length
and trap sediment.
ENV EF 27
See on-line version for current revisions.
Page 7 of 8 Revision Date: 06/22/09
