Lane III (608)266-4266,Rm. 116
Dane County Zoning Administrator
Subj: Update information regarding Billboard Signs
During a recent review of a sign permit for a billboard signs, it has come to the
attention of the Zoning Department that the policies of copy area for billboard
signs has been incorrectly interpreted. The policy was that billboard signs were
viewed to have the same provisions as pylon signs. With pylon signs, only one
face of a back-to-back sign has been counted in the total square footage of the
sign per Dane County Code of Ordinance (DCCO) section 10.73(9).
The review of the sign ordinance revealed that the provisions for pylons signs
will no longer apply to billboard signs. The provisions for pylon signs may only
be used for signs which display information regarding the business or activity on
the premise which the pylon sign is placed per DCCO section10.74(19). Billboard
signs advertise only off-premise information and will no longer be able to use
provision for pylon signs. Meaning, all copy area for billboard back-to-back signs
will be counted toward the maximum size of 300 square feet per DCCO 10.74(6)
Please note that all permits for billboard signs that have been issued in the past
will be honored as described in the permit. All future billboard signs and
replaced billboard sign will adhere to the following summary of requirements per
Dane County Code of Ordinances, Chapter 10, SubChapter II, Sign Ordinance:
❑ 10.71(8) Billboard signs shall mean an off-premise advertising sign with a
copy area of 96 square feet.
❑ 10.74 (6) Billboard signs shall have a maximum size of 300 square feet.
❑ 10.71 (38) All copy areas of the billboard sign will be counted as part of the
maximum size of the sign.
