Dane County Parks
5201 Fen Oak Drive
Madison WI. 53718
Contact: Darren Marsh
Parks Director
Project: Marsh Creek Foot Bridge-Walking Iron Wildlife Area
Site Location: SEC. 5 SW1/4 SE1/4
Narrative: Volunteers to build and install proposed foot-bridge over the "Marsh Creek" within the
Walking Iron County Wildlife Area. The foot-bridge will serve as a walking access to Dane
County park lands open to passive recreation including public hunting. Currently there is no
access across Marsh Creek on public lands accept by wading.
The clear span foot-bridge will be — 34' in length and span'16 width of Marsh Creek. That has
been dredged and shaped. The distance from berm to berm is^'30. Both sides of the ditch
are owned by Dane County. There is a high berm (excavated materials) on the East of the
creek and a lower berm with remnant of dam structure used for irrigation on the West side.
Both sides of the ditch are currently in agriculture with a vegetated buffer strip between the
fields and the waterway. The vegetation is mainly invasive trees and shrubs.
Bridge: The bridge plans were prepared by the volunteers following WDNR Trail Bridge
Specifications. The Bridge will be constructed using repurposed utility poles provided by
Alliant Energy. There will be a minimal excavation of approximately 1' deep by 4' wide x 6'
long on each berm to install floating footing pads for the bridge poles to rest on. Bridge
will be anchored with steel cable to hold in place.
Height: Seeking a 1' variance in bridge height from the 5' clearance above ordinary water mark.
Navigation is restricted by a culvert under CTH Y above the site and a culvert on Beckman Rd.
below the culvert. The bridge will sit at 4' above the ordinary high water mark. High water
would not reach the bridge structure without spreading out over a larger floodplain.
Disturbance: All disturbed areas will be seeded and mulched with the installation of the bridge.
Cultural Sites: There is one culture site identified west of this bridge site located within an agriculture
field. No impact to this site.
ER Review: Used 12/7/2018 an ER Review provided by WDNR Nate Fayram for similar bridge on
disturbed site on Big Ditch directly North on the same property. Can provide further review.
