Zoning
Inspector Russ Bartlett gave me a packet of information about your Zoning Permit ZP2010-0693 for the 60'x118' pole barn
completed earlier this year. He said you wanted to build a 15'x48' addition on the southwest corner of the pole barn to
connect it to an existing horse barn.
Unfortunately, it appears a recent change to the Dane County Zoning Ordinance limits the total of buildings on this lot to
10% lot coverage. Russ's calculations show that the existing buildings already exceed this limit. I'll review this in more
detail with the assistance of Shawn Widish, who probably will be working with you later on this appeal.
In the meantime, please review the Variance Appeal application and instructions available at the following link:
http://countyofdane.com/PLANDEV/zoning/variance.aspx
Please fill out the forms and gather the application materials -- it would be helpful if you could send or email them to us for
better preliminary review. Then we'll schedule a meeting to discuss the details and process you'll go through, and to
provide an Appeal number when you pay the $350 application fee.
Note that you'll need to notify the Town Clerk, Jo Ann Ramsfield at (608) 837-6688, to let her know you'll be asking the
Dane County Board of Adjustment for a variance; also, please ask her to email me an "acknowledgment' saying she
knows about the proposal (as required in the instructions above).
You might also want to read a short chapter of the guidebook that Board of Adjustment members use when deciding
whether to grant variances, to give you some pointers and a better understanding of what's involved. It's Chapter 15 of the
Zoning Board Handbook, which you can view at this link:
http://www4. uwsp.edu/cnr/landcenter/Publications/BOA2006/BOA2006. pdf
Please call or email if you have any questions.
Kris Schutte
Assistant Zoning Administrator
Dane County Zoning Division
Department of Planning and Development
608.266.9084
schufte@co.dane.wi.us
