Petition 10673 — Novation Campus
Additional Planning Division Comments 4/21/2014
South Madison Market Component
Dane County is funding a business plan grant to develop a food enterprise in the
Alexander Co. building under review on Rimrock Road. The goal of the project and the
project partners is to eliminate a food desert and create a viable neighbhorhood market
that connects local food producers to consumers, and creates new jobs. The South
Madison Farmer's Market was awarded the grant to expand their services, and create a
year round venue.
Dane County has led this effort and both Dane County and the City of Fitchburg would
like to see it come to fruition.
Currently, the building design includes 4,000 sf on the first floor for the South Madison
Market to locate. The South Madison Market will include a grocery, a coffee bar and a
restaurant. It will serve both the community and the growing campus of employers and
employees.
Because the market is in the center of the building, the site is not that visible, and is
setback from the community. Several changes would make it more visible and
welcoming to the community. These features include; putting the main entrance on
Novation Parkway and making it handicap accessible; providing appropriate access
through the main doors for trucks to unload product from Novation Parkway into the
market; adding signage vertically above the market on both sides of the building, and on
Rimrock Road; and, providing pedestrian and community friendly amenities such as
several benches outside the market, and bike racks at both the front and rear entrances
to the market.
If the market is to serve the community and employees equally, these changes would
add help to identify the market as part of the community and make it more visible to
the community, vehicle traffic and the area employers, and in turn help to facilitate a
greater customer base for the market.
