The wetland boundaries were marked with
pink"wetland delineation"wire-stake flags.
Results and Discussion
Regional Geology 6' Soils
The geology of the surrounding region consists of glacial deposits, primarily outwash plains,
ground moraines and old glacial lake beds. The land surfaces are gently sloping in the higher
areas, which are ground moraine, and nearly level in low-lying areas, which are outwash
plains and old lake beds. Soils that formed in ground moraines have silt loam and silty clay
loam surface layers underlain by sandy loam material. Soils that formed in glacial outwash
have silt loam and silty clay loam surface layers underlain by sand and gravel. Soils that
formed in lake beds have silt loam surface layers underlain by silty clay and clay.
Wetland in this landscape forms in extensive low-lying areas lacking drainage outlets,in
closed depressions,in drainage-ways and on the margins of streams, rivers and lakes.
Wetlands
Overview of Wetlands&Wetland Boundary Characteristics
The wetlands consisted of five separate crop field areas (Figure 2):
Wetland Type Wetland Size (acres)
Wetland 1 Farmed wetland (fresh,wet 1.3
meadow inclusion)
Wetland 2 1/2 Farmed wetland; 1/2 fresh, 0.6
wet meadow
Wetland 3 Farmed wetland (fresh,wet 0.5
meadow inclusion)
Wetland 4 Farmed wetland 5.3
Wetland 5 Fresh,wet meadow 1.5
Total: 9.2
The wetlands also consisted of two stretches of ditch bank(Figure 2):
Ditch-bank length (lineal
Wetland Type feet)
Wetland 6 Fresh,wet meadow/ 590
Floodplain forest
Wetland 7 Fresh,wet meadow 730
Total: 1,320
Wetland boundaries along drainage ditches were formed by the tops of the ditch banks.
