May 5, 1999
tior Dear Dane County Committee, Staff, and Interested Parties,
I am concerned about Zoning Petition 7409 in the Town of
Roxbury. The petition does not mention hunting, an important
recreational activity on this land, now purchased by local people
who are ardent hunbers, from the Smedleys, who were ardent
conservationists and vegetarians.
Although the land was returned to owners who enjoy hunting,
the deer season of 1998 had to be a record in discord amongst
the usual area hunters. The acrimony touched on the use of
the Ice Age Trail land access easement to the east of Breunig
Road, plus fence damage to adjoining farmland owners Speth,
Breretons, and Ballwegs . These owners will not accept the
continued degradation of the fence lines; no responsible tenant
or landowner will willfully damage fences where nearby grazing
animals could break through and wreck havoc on crops of their
neighbors.
I am writing on behalf of the hunters who have hunted this
area with landowner permission, and believe I am on good terms
with the area farmers.
Why the new property owners, i.e. , the petitioners and
their relatives/friends (hunters themselves) chose to
aggressively enter, poach, and litter adjoining land without
permission is a mystery.
Last fall ' s altercations were serious enough that at least
one of the adjoining farm families is planning to forbid free
Ihr hunting on their land; four more adjoining farmers are
anticipating being forced to do the same, in great part to
protect themselves from the petitioners/relatives/friends.
If adjoining landowners do carry out their no free hunting
policy, approximately 350 acres of prime hunting will no longer
be available to many of us who have enjoyed hunting privileges
here.
Have you considered that this petition is a wedge for a
multiple homes subdivision? Homes directly adjoining Ice Age
Trail property? The 35+ acre parcel can be subdivided into
a total of 5 . 74 lots; the zoning petition requests changing
this A-1 EX AG land to RH-2 Rural Homes -- more than one! The
very expensive driveway is unlikely to be feasible for only
a single house, but most likely will become a town road for
multiple houses.
By the way, the Roxbury Town Chairman is an uncle to the
petitioners, and he has not abstained from voting on either
Petition 7409 or petitioners ' driveway permit.
Yours truly,
T. Zimmerman
(100,
cc: file RECEIVED
MAY U 1999
D.C.PLANNING&DEVELOPMENT
