Hydro Seeding
A. Description - This item consists of the seeding of steeper grades matching the remaining hill
using the hydro seeding materials, equipment and seed specified herein.
B. Methods- Seeding operations shall use a mechanically-agitated hydro seeder with a minimum
tank size of 500 gallons. Pump-agitated hydro seeders will not be allowed.
Seed shall be applied at the combined rate of 23.375 pounds per acre (approximately 8.6 ounces
per 1000 square feet) for native seed and cover crop, using 2,000 pounds of hydro mulch per
acre. Seeding and mulching rates may be higher in specific areas if so directed by the engineer.
The seed mixture, mulch and water shall be placed into the machine's tank in sufficient quantities
that when the contents of the tank are sprayed on a given area the seed will be uniformly spread at
the required rate of application in a one-step operation. During the process, the contents of the
tank shall be kept stirred to provide uniform distribution of the seed and mulch. The contents of
the tank shall be emptied within one hour after the seed is added to the tank. Seed which is
allowed to remain mixed with the water for longer than one hour will be rejected.
Hydro seeding shall not be applied before, during or immediately after rainfall so that the matrix
will have 24 hours to cure and dry after installation. In dry weather, hydro seeding operations
shall begin as early as possible each morning to allow time for drying prior to nightfall.
C. Materials- The following seed and mulch materials shall be used:
Native Seed
Grasses lbs/Acre % purity % germ.
Andropogon gerardi (Big bluestem) 2.5 85 60
Schizachyrium scoparium (Little bluestem 1.0 75 60
Sorghastrum nutans (Indian grass) - 2.5 90 60
Bouteloua curtipendula (Side-oats grama) 1.0 90 60
Forbs oz/Acre % purity % germ.
Rudbeckia hirta (Black-eyed susan) 1 97 60
Liatris aspera (Rough blazing star) 2 95 60
Solidago rigida (Stiff goldenrod) 1 97 60
S. speciosa (Showy goldenrod) 1 97 60
Aster azureus(Sky-blue aster) 1 90 60
Helianthus laetiflorus (Showy sunflower) 3 97 60
Lespedeza capitata (Bush clover) 4 97 60
Lupinus perennis (Lupine) 4 97 60
Ratibida pinnata(Yellow coneflower) 2 97 60
Silphium laciniatum (Compass plant) 4 85 60
