Reasons why the site is suitable for the proposed use:
• What is on this site?
A substantial source of high quality sand and gravel does exist on this site.
Exhibits E-13,14
What is high quality sand and gravel used for?
High quality natural sand is an integral and specified component of hot-mix asphalt and
concrete.
Other uses include: base course, pipe bedding, landscaping, sand boxes, winter highway
safety, etc.
Where does high quality sand come from now?
Substantial, high quality sand and gravel deposits are scarce in Dane County.
A substantial amount of sand is trucked into Dane County from Sauk City and Janesville.
The site is available:
The property owners, the Herfels, have leased the site to Fitchburg Minerals for the
purpose of mineral extraction.
Location:
The proposed site entrance is located on State Trunk Highway 69, approximately one mile
from the USH 18/151 Verona bypass, a four-lane divided highway.
The site is approximately 7 miles from major users such as Payne & Dolari s hot-mix
asphalt production facility, Wingra Stone's redi-mix concrete production facility, and
Wisconsin Brick & Block's production facility.
Why not someplace else?
Sand and gravel deposits are a result of glacial activity which occurred thousands of years
ago. -Today, we can identify probable deposit locations by consulting glacial maps and
geologists.
Potential sites have been lost to residential or commercial development, or have failed to
meet the size or quality requirements, or because the landowner is not willing to sell or
lease the property.
Of those few potential sites which remain, expensive testing must be done to determine if
the quality and size of the deposit make it useable and economically feasible.
In short, we have no control over where these deposits are located, nor the quality of a
deposit once it is found. Such is the nature of valuable natural resources.
7
