SPILL KIT USAGE
Spill control kits were made available at several of our plants and
shops . Since then, we have been able to put them to use, and gain
some experience with them. One important thing that we have
learned about using the kits, and that we want everyone to know, is
that the best circumstance in which to use them is WHEN THERE IS A
SPILL ONTO WATER.
The absorbant flakes and booms are best used to pick up spilled
materials that float . Otherwise, use sand, gravel or soils to form
dams to stop a flow of spilled material, or to soak up pools of
contaminants .
As a reminder, here is what each spill kit contains, and where the
kits may be located:
• Several ten-foot long "socks" filled with an oil-absorbant
stuffing. These socks will float on water and can be strung
out , end to end, using the built-in clips . They can be used on
water, as a boom to contain an oil slick, or on land, as a dam
to stop the spread of a spill .
• A bag of oil-absorbant flakes . These can be scattered on water,
to absorb floating oil .
• Several garbage bags . The bags can be used to hold and
transport the oil-soaked booms and flakes to the Busse shop for
disposal or recycling, after you have cleaned up the spill .
Contact Peter Tolsma at (414) 524-1849 for proper disposal
guidelines .
These items are stored in a large yellow overpack drum with a
screw-on lid. This overpack drum is sized to hold a conventional
55-gallon drum. Use the overpack drum in case you have to deal
with a leaking 55-gallon drum that contains a solvent or some other
hazardous material .
If you have a spill situation where you need a kit, contact Nan
Hoepfl at (414) 524-1828, and she will make the kit available to
you. Afterwards, let her know how much of the kit' s contents you
used, so that the materials can be replenished.
Sp'1kcs2.mpc
