July 30, 1997
Based on the above, estimates of annual leachable nitrogen from the current agricultural land
use (planting rotation of two years of corn followed by one year of soybeans or alfalfa) is as
follows:
Leachable Ag-N =46 ac x(2 yr+3 yr)x 160 lb-N/ac/com yr x(1 -0.4)
=2,940 lb-N/yr
Estimates of annual leachable nitrogen from the proposed school use would be:
Leachable School-N =300 cap x 5.2 kg-N/cap/yr x 2.2 lb/kg x(8 hr/dy+16 hr/dy)x(185 dy/yr+365 dy/yr)
=870 lb-N/yr
Therefore, there is more nitrogen available for impacting groundwater with agricultural use of
the property than from the proposed school onsite wastewater treatment and dispersal system.
This is also true for the projected build-out capacity of 875 people. For this population, the
estimated leachable school-N is 2,540 lb-N/yr.
Anderson,M. 1997.Personal communication.
